Former Lal Masjid Cleric’s Wife, Jamia Hafsa Head Umme Hassan Granted Bail

Islamabad: A court has granted post-arrest bail to Umme Hassan, the wife of former Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz and head of Jamia Hafsa, ordering her release.

On Wednesday, Umme Hassan, along with other female students and teachers, was presented before the court after completing a two-day physical remand.

It is noteworthy that Umme Hassan and other accused individuals were booked in a case related to interfering in government affairs and allegedly firing at state officials.

Judge Tahir Abbas Supra of the Anti-Terrorism Court heard the bail applications. The court approved the post-arrest bail applications of all the accused, including Umme Hassan.

Earlier, reports emerged that Islamabad’s district administration and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had demolished part of the under-construction Jamia Hafsa, an Islamic seminary adjacent to Lal Masjid.

A district administration official stated that an illegal reconstruction was underway on government land, which led to the partial demolition of the structure. According to the official, only the walls of the building had been erected so far, and most of them were dismantled.

It is important to recall that in 2007, during the tenure of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, the Lal Masjid operation resulted in the demolition of Jamia Hafsa. At that time, the district administration had offered ten marlas of land near Tarnol, Islamabad, for a women’s seminary, but the Lal Masjid administration rejected the offer.

On the other hand, Maulana Abdul Aziz, who oversees Lal Masjid’s affairs, claimed that the seminary's walls were not demolished by the district administration or CDA officials but by the Lal Masjid administration itself.
